'This Happened' Design Meetups

Together with 3 friends, I organize quarterly design events in Rotterdam, we are normally in the culture and event location WORM but are also taking part in design festivals.

This happened is a series of events focused on the story behind a design project.. Having ideas is easier than making it happen. It is part of an international format that currently takes place in Hamburg, London and Rotterdam.  We dive into projects that exist today, to find out how their concepts and process can inspire future work.  In the Rotterdam edition, an evening consists of 4 speakers. Each speaker has 10 minutes to present their work, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A from the audience. Talks are given in English and focus on the design process rather than the final product. The talks itself are filmed and shared through our webpage and Youtube channel.  In between and after the talks there are breaks with drinks and time for networking.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Apart from organizing design meetups and facilitating others I also like to share my knowledge by giving talks myself. One topic that I gave several talks about is  Cultural differences and how they can affect design.
Living in many different countries made me aware of cultural differences and that they should be taken into consideration when designing for different cultural backgrounds.  I studied different approaches to cultural dimensions (e.g Hofstede, Meyer, Cyr) and am working on guidelines for designing for different cultural backgrounds and gave talks about this topic at with Bindu Upadhyay at several meetups and conferences, such as UX camp, Inclusive Design 24, and Ladies that UX Amsterdam.
